CELLULITE Facts ... by Karli Taylor
A friend of mine asked me about the c word yesterday… CELLULITE.
Cellulite is one of the “dirty” words in the health, fitness or beauty industry. Nobody wants it, nobody talks about it and those who do suffer with it are infuriated that not everyone has the same problem. Why does it appear on some women more than others, and why do some men actually get it as well? The research on cellulite - including what causes it and how to treat it – has remained very vague and is usually followed by an exercise gimmick or someone trying to sell a fad product.
So what's the REAL story? Well- to put it as simply as possible, cellulite is fat that has been set loose from its resting place. An excess of estrogen in the body (yes ladies, this is why we have more cellulite) causes collagen fibers to deteriorate around fat cells allowing some to be broken free. The newly free to travel fat cells rise toward the surface and gets trapped right underneath of the skin giving us that wonderful orange peel like look...
So we all have fat cells, and we all have estrogen. So we can all have cellulite. The fewer fat cells we have, the fewer that can be set free right? AND- by keeping up the quality of your skin, you will help the appearance of the cellulite that you have naturally. Loose skin makes cellulite look worse. Loose skin occurs when it is not properly moisturized AND when there is not enough muscle fibers under there. SO this gives you yet another reason to hit the weights!
