Setting An Example

According to a recent study conducted by the YMCA of America, 74 percent of children ages 5-10 get less than an hour of exercise every day. The majority of parents surveyed blamed financial hardship, technology and lack of time for the decline of youth fitness. In my opinion, there are a few things wrong with this explanation.

First of all, technology costs money. Computers and video games are expensive. A lot more expensive than a pair of sneakers to wear outside to play. Not only do these things cost money, but they also take time to use.

If parents limited their child’s access to video games, television and the internet, not only would there be some money for extracurricular activities, but there would be plenty of time as well.

As parents and authority figures, have to set an example for our children through our own actions. Less than 20% of American adults are physically active 3 or more days a week. How do we expect our children to understand the importance of fitness if we do not practice what we preach? A child who grows up with parents who belong to a health club or a running group, who play in adult sporting leagues or participate in any regular physical activity will see this behavior as normal.

It’s understandable that in these financial times, parents have to work more to support a family. I won’t argue that point. What they do with their children during the valuable family time that they get, however, is the key to creating good habits that will be carried into adulthood. If a parent comes home from work every night only to sit on front of the television with the family, not only will there be no physical activity, but there will be very little meaningful interaction. Why not go for a walk as a family after dinner? Play a game of basketball in the driveway or wiffle ball in the back yard. Find anything physical that you can do as a family and commit to at least 2 nights a week. It’s not enough, but it’s a great start!

Compression Gear is Slowly Taking Over The Shelves

compression gear... By Karli Taylor

One of the newer buzzwords in the fitness clothing industry is “compression”. From socks to swimsuits, compression gear is slowing taking over the shelves. Recently, there have been many different claims made by various companies about the advantages of this type of clothing- some of which have more validity than others. Let’s take a look at the two real benefits of these tight fitting clothing garments.

Regulating body temperature: The main difference between these tight fitting garments and regular clothing is their ability to efficiently remove perspiration from the skin. This is achieved by the use of moisture wicking fabrics and the garments tight fitting nature. Unlike other breathable garments, you won’t get perspiration collecting on the skin. This means that in hot climates your bodies cooling system continues to work efficiently and that in the cold you are not wearing wet clothing therefore will stay warmer.

Reduction in excess muscle movement: Compression clothing prevents your muscles from shaking or vibrating upon impact. Every time you move, your muscles move too. When they do small tears appear within the muscle tissue. By reducing the rate at which this damage takes place we are able to work for longer and experience less pain following training. The principle behind stopping body shake is old and probably the best example is the wearing of sports bras by woman. Now with the elastic properties of compression garments we are able to provide the same sort of support for the rest of your body. This is the reason that your garments must be firm fitting and appropriate for your sport or activity.

You will find other claims surrounding compression clothing. Some companies claim that it increases blood flow to the muscles. Some claim that it will increase the power output of your muscles or increase your stamina. None of these claims have been studied thoroughly enough for me to confidently support them, so I’ll leave the jury out for now.

Setting Weight Loss Goals for The New Year

Setting Fitness Goals for Weight Loss

... By Karli Taylor

So I swore that I was not going to jump on the band wagon and write about New Year's Resolutions - BUT...

Honestly, I have been reading all of the articles going out this year about making and keeping resolutions and there is one very important piece of advice that seems to be missing. Everyone says make realistic goals - good start. For the sake of this rant, let's keep our focus on weight loss as a goal. Saying that you want to lose 50 pounds by February is not a realistic goal- saying that you want to lose 10 is a bit better.

Some sources are going a step further telling you to break down your big goal into smaller more attainable mini-goals. That, in my opinion, is key. Setting your goal at a pound a week seems much less overwhelming than 5 pounds this month, doesn't it? One thing I would like to add to this step is to reward yourself for reaching these little milestones. NO- I do not mean by having a hot fudge sundae...

Find something non-food related to keep you motivated. One of my clients was lusting after a 64 inch plasma. His goal was to lose 100 pounds. After every 5 pound loss, he put 10$ into a jar and his wife matched it. This became his TV fund which grew as he shrunk. Not a bad idea.

The piece that I feel is vital to actually reaching your goal regardless of what it may be is this- YOU NEED A PLAN. Write it down. Map it out step by step. If you are going to lose a pound a week, what steps are you going to take to do that? Make yourself a daily or weekly task list and actually check things off of it. Hold yourself accountable.

Take it a step further and include your family and friends- have them initial your task list when you do certain things. Having someone check up on you will help on those days when the warm bed is much more appealing than the cold walk to the car to go to the gym!

We have a tendency to focus all of our energy on the big prize at the end. Sometimes that works, but more often than not it becomes a distraction. If you focus every day on the small steps you need to take to reach your ultimate goal, before you know it, you'll be right there.

So here's your homework- write down your resolution and create your own strategic plan.
